HOW EASTER BEGAN

Feast in the House of Simon, 1610, El Greco

And he said, "Taffeta is in this season representing the splendid colors of the Spring Solstice.  And there shall be much money spent on clothes and hats and matching shoes. Beauty parlors shall curl and snip and dye and bleach.  Much money.  And there will be ham.  All the children shall find joy in the form of a bountiful basket of Easter Eggs brought by a selfless and benevolent rabbit, the  Easter Bunny.  What better way to commemorate the bestowing of eternal life and exoneration from the sins of mankind!"

  1. And white shoes. If it's after the spring solstice, we can wear white shoes.
This is great, my friend. Made me laugh, especially "curl and snip and dye and bleach"!

  3. This makes me want to fly to VA, don my best taffeta ensemble, and take your whole family to Easter dinner at the Golden Corral, where there is sure to be ham....((considering that Jesus was part of a Jewish community, I have wondered where the ham dinner traditions began..)

    1. Baby Sis and I are still reeling from that Thanksgiving we spent herded into Golden Corral! The flashbacks happen whenever I am in crowded places. (shudder)

  4. Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I can recall in our church, when I was little, that there were several ladies who always tried to out-do each other in the finery department. The problem was, they did this EVERY Sunday, not just Easter.

  5. Like Charlie Brown, sitting in the middle of the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin, I believed in the Easter Bunny. That was the first lie my parents admitted to. Then came Santa. We won't even go into where babies come from or what became of my pet skunk (Sweet Willy); ever since I have been a skeptic. Happy Easter and taffeta rules!

  6. There should be a difference between "Sunday best" and "better than thou."
What gets me are the plastic "eggs" shaped like footballs or Darth Vader masks.

  7. Your description of the celebration of Easter is spot on. I find Easter very humbling.
